A Comprehensive Approach to Developing Proper Technique

Private Lessons with an Advanced Instructor

Experience the expertise of a master instructor. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, you can achieve your goals—gain confidence, improve technique, make the team, or enhance racing performance.

Charles River Aquatics offers small group lessons as well as private (one swimmer, one instructor) or semi-private lessons (two swimmers of the same or similar skill level with one instructor).

Lap Swimming

School Year Season | September–June

Enjoy lap swimming with two convenient registration options: a set schedule with automatic monthly billing or a flexible punch pass system.

Step 1 – Create an Account
You must first create an account and add yourself as the “student” (even though this is not an instructional program). Then you can choose your preferred registration option.

Option 1 – Set Schedule

Lock in a set day(s) and time(s) for consistent lap swimming. Once enrolled, you will start the following month through May, billed automatically at $80/month per option unless you request to discontinue.

Log in to your account and select Lap Swim Punch Passes to purchase passes.

Step 2: Redeem Punch Passes
Redeem passes for specific days and times before your swim:

  1. Go to My Account
  2. Click the red sun icon / PASSES in your student profile
  3. Select Use Punch Pass
  4. Choose the date on the calendar
  5. Punch in at your selected swim time

We will reserve a lane for you at your chosen date and time.

Summer Season | June–August

During summer, the competition pool has limited availability. Pick from weekly options and pay $20 per swim.

Adult Beginner

Location: Warm Teaching Pool & Shallow Lanes in Competition Pool
Class Size: 8
Cost: $225/month

This program is designed for adults with little to no swim experience through intermediate swimmers. Build comfort, confidence, and basic skills in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

Adult Small Group Coaching

Location: Competition Pool
Class Size: 7
Cost: $225/month

Ideal for adult swimmers looking to refine technique. Participants can focus on specific skills or allow the coach to guide instruction based on individual goals.

Adult Clinics

Starts & Turns Clinics

Duration: 1 hour
Prerequisites:

  • Age 18+
  • Familiar with all four competitive strokes
  • Able to dive and execute flip turns

Focus on refining starts and turns to maximize efficiency in practice or prepare for competition. Clinics include:

  • Powerful dive mechanics
  • Timing underwater kicks and breakout strokes
  • Minimizing wall time on turns and improving speed off the wall

Triathlon Training – Swim/Run Focus

Schedule: Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, 11:00 am–12:00 pm
Dates: Dec 2 – Feb 12 (no classes 12/23, 12/25, 12/30, 1/1)
Cost: $180 per session

This high-intensity, one-hour class combines:

  • 30-minute coached swim workout focusing on technique, intervals, and endurance
  • 30-minute deep water run to improve aerobic fitness, strength, and joint-friendly conditioning

Instructor: Jen Scalise-Marinofsky, Charles River Aquatics Masters Head Swim Coach and accomplished triathlete. With over 30 years of competing and 17 years of coaching, Jen is a USAT All-American and 10-time Ironman World Championships qualifier in Kona.

Private Family Pool Rentals

Family Recreational Swim Rental

Enjoy a one-hour private rental of the Teaching Pool (23.5 x 44 feet, 4 feet deep) for your family.

Important: Maximum of 12 participants, including those in the water and on deck.

Have fun splashing, playing, and enjoying quality time with your family in the warm teaching pool.

Important Notes:

  • Everyone attending must be registered with Charles River Aquatics to ensure a release form is on file. Family members can complete this when booking; non-family attendees must create our account and complete the registration process.
  • Changing on deck is not permitted. Use the available changing rooms.
  • Enter via the wet corridor, where a staff member will check you in. Arrive 10 minutes early to get ready.

Adult Swim Lesson Levels

Beginner I
Class Size: Max 5
For adults new to the water, hesitant, or unable to float or swim. Focus is on water safety, comfort, and foundational skills for body position and breathing.

Skills Developed:

  • Face in water and blow bubbles
  • Full submersion (bobs, ring retrieval)
  • Transition from horizontal to vertical (swimming to standing)
  • Sculling for lift and propulsion
  • Independent front and back float (10 sec)
  • Introduction to front/back flutter kicks and basic freestyle
  • Shallow jumps and aided deep water jumps

Beginner II
Class Size: Max 5
Focus on correct body position, propulsive flutter kick on front and back, and introduction to freestyle with side breathing and basic backstroke.

Skills Developed:

  • Hip-driven flutter kick on front and back (T-Press)
  • Streamline/glides on front and back
  • Introduction to breaststroke arms
  • Freestyle with side breathing
  • Backstroke fundamentals
  • Foundation of treading water
  • Unaided deep water jumps
  • 25-yard continuous swimming

Intermediate I
Class Size: Max 5
Emphasis on freestyle fundamentals: breathing, timing, and correct pull pattern. Backstroke skills build, with sculling, breaststroke, and dolphin kick introduced.

Skills Developed:

  • 50-yard thumb-touch catch-up freestyle
  • 50-yard backstroke with rotation
  • 25-yard 6-kick-and-roll on back
  • 25-yard breaststroke kick
  • 10-yard underwater streamline on front
  • Introduction to underwater back streamlines and somersaults
  • 1-minute treading water

Intermediate II
Class Size: Max 5
Focus on rotation, high-elbow catch, improved breathing, and combining technique with fitness. Lessons include drills and continuous swimming (500–1000 yards/session).

Skills Developed:

  • 100-yard freestyle with correct body position, pull pattern, 6-beat kick, and rotation
  • 50-yard backstroke with proper form
  • 25-yard breaststroke
  • Underwater streamlines on front and back
  • Dive progression continued
  • Introduction to flip and open turns
  • 200-yard continuous flutter kicking

Advanced I
Class Size: Max 6
Students swim longer distances in freestyle and backstroke with continued technique refinement. Flip turns and breaststroke pullouts are introduced, with pace clock usage for workout tracking.

Skills Developed:

  • 100-yard freestyle with flip turns
  • Backstroke flip turns
  • 50-yard breaststroke with pullouts
  • Racing starts
  • Dolphin kick

Advanced II
Class Size: Max 6
Designed for swimmers preparing to join a Master’s Team program. Focus on fitness, interval sets, and swimming multiple strokes over longer distances.

Skills Developed:

  • 500-yard freestyle with flip turns
  • Starts and breakouts
  • 10 x 50-yard kicking at 1:00 with fins
  • 100-yard breaststroke with pullouts
  • Optional introduction to butterfly
